Starter clutch question

I'm tinkering with my TNT's gearbox because the starter sometimes grinds. I've taken out the clutch and I'm wondering if the small gears close to the oil pump should spin easily when I turn them by hand. Right now, they feel a bit tight. Any ideas about this?

Dealing with a stubborn gearbox is a pain! The gears near the oil pump should have some resistance but they shouldn't just freewheel. If you can turn them with your fingers, even if it's a bit tight, you're probably good. The grinding starter could be something else entirely, like a worn Bendix gear. You might want to double-check that before you go too deep into the clutch housing. Good luck with the rebuild!
